More than two million New Yorkers have diabetes, a leading cause of death in our state.
State resources to fight type 2 diabetes and obesity are very limited, especially when considering the fiscal impact of diabetes on our state – $15.8 billion in medical costs alone!
Now, legislators want to reduce critical diabetes and obesity funding!
We stand with the American Diabetes Association in urging our legislators to support at least $5,970,000 in funding specifically allocated for our state’s type 2 diabetes/obesity line item.
Combining these funds with other disease-related funding and then reducing the state’s appropriation for these programs by 20% is currently being proposed.
2 million New Yorkers already have diabetes. Several million more people have prediabetes, and are at increased risk for developing type 2 diabetes.
This disease is a leading cause of death in New York and is responsible for $15.8 billion in annual medical costs and another $5.8 billion in lost productivity in our state.
While the societal toll is staggering, the human cost is measured in blindness, amputation, stroke, and heart and kidney disease.
Tell our legislators to protect programs that prevent diabetes!
